TERRORISM IN DISGUISE Ruth Servius Florida International University INTRODUCTION Terrorism in Syria has been quite horrific especially for the Syrian civilians to the extent to which one can refer to it as a melee. ISIS, the U.S., Russia and the Syrian government itself have committed atrocities against Syrian civilians. The Syrian Government which is not the sole offender in the Syrian war, however, did use chemical weapons in its capital of Aleppo against its own protesting civilians (Luther, 2016). In response of the use of chemical weapons being used the U.S. decided to intervene since they deemed it necessary to uphold moral standards. Despite the U.S. reasoning and intentions for entering Syria and training rebel forces to combat Assad the Syrian leader their plan ultimately fails once part of the U.S. backed Syrian Rebels joins with Al-Qaida affiliates in Iraq and forms ISIS (The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria) who decides attack another group in Syria called the Kurds and the same Rebel group that are still being backed the U.S. While this is occurring, the U.S. starts its air striking campaign in Syria and began to train the Syria rebels to fight just ISIS instead of Assad’s forces. In response to the U.S. actions in Syria Russia who is Assad’s strongest ally begins its drone strikes in Syria claiming to fight ISIS but mainly has been targeting the U.S. backed Syrian Rebels who just so happen to be fighting Assad. Marijuana usage has been on the rise for the past decade. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, over 94 million Americans have admitted to using marijuana at least once (2015). This can be said to be a pandemic, which is continuing to increase. Even though the recreational usage of marijuana is illegal within most of the United States, it continues to be used and is widely sold in the black market. States have started to realize that taxing the recreational use of marijuana can bring in more revenues for the state. Currently, four states and the District of Columbia have legalized the recreational use of marijuana by taxing it (CNN, 2015). As an engineer, I could use the weapons for destruction or to supply them to terrorists who use them to destroy property and lives. I find it more ethical to ensure that any engineering activity is performed to standard and with a moral standing. Just like any other field, engineers need to uphold professionalism by obeying the rules of trade, the working principles and protection regulations, as well as the code of conduct. I would be keen to ensure that I meet the requirements of every task to ensure the safety of life. Consider, a project to construct a bridge that crosses a wide river. I would ensure that the resources are procured and disbursed on time. Ethic demands that these engineers make good designs to protect the lives of hundreds and thousands who consume such products. engineers design and implement large structures which may destroy the lives of many if found faulty. Some of the engineers have invested heavily in designing automobiles which have contributed to the adverse changes in climate. Ethics requires that one looks at engineering field as a profession whose outlook is essentially objective and disinterested, where the motive of making money is subordinated to serving the client in a manner not inconsistent with the public good (Lawlor, n.d.). I think it is not plausible to think of remuneration as motivation to be a vice. I think what would be considered unethical is in the case of bribery. I would consider it unethical when an engineer fails to make a prompt or urgent decision based on ignorance. One should portray respect for life, the law, and ensure that their work is for the good of the public and they should h ave responsible leadership skills(Howard, 2008). References Howard, P. P. S.
